Programme Notes
Composed in 1998, this piece pays homage to the Spanish and Latin 20th century guitar repertoire by Villa-Lobos, Brouwer and Rodrigo. The title is taken from the Raymond Carver poem of the same name, and the musical discourse is free and improvisatory. A Forge, and a Scythe was written for guitarist Danielle Cumming, and a recording of which is available on her debut CD entitled Postcards.
